Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate changes in design and optical features and analyze refractive and clinical outcomes of the new generation of the Medennium (USA) posterior chamber silicone phakic IOL (MPL), in comparison to the previous generation of PRL.

Setting:

International Center for Ophthalmology, Moscow, Russia. Blue Eye, Centro di Microchirurgia Oculare, and Centro Oculistico Capitanio, Milano, Italy

Methods:

45 MPLs were implanted in 45 myopic eyes of 23 patients with the range of myopia from -5.0 to -28.0 D. Standard examination: VA, AL by IOLMaster, ECC, IOP, ACD by OCT Visante, corneal topography were performed Preop and at 18 months Postop. MPL power calculation was performed using Hoffer-Dementiev chart. Original surgical technique of MPL implantation through 2.0 mm clear cornea incision with injector was developed and will be discussed.

Results:

All the eyes received desired calculated refraction, there is no contact between MPL and anterior capsule seen by slit lamp, no cataract, no IOP rise, no EC loss or decentration was noticed in follow up. No patient’s complained of halo or glare.

Conclusions:

This new generation of PRL is made from the same biocompatible silicone material, with larger diameter optics and thinner haptics, can correct myopia up to 30.0 D. It is easier to implant and manipulate and injector use makes the surgery safer and the refractive results show high predictability.
