Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the visual outcomes of patients implanted with two trifocal intraocular lenses (IOL) for the correction of presbyopia.

Setting:

Vissum-Corporación Oftalmológica de Alicante. Alicante, Spain.

Methods:

This retrospective, comparative, consecutive study included a total of 80 eyes of 40 patients that had bilateral refractive lens exchange and trifocal diffractive IOL implantation: Group A , 20 patients (40 eyes) implanted with AT LISA tri 839MP (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA) and Group B, 20 patients (40 eyes) implanted with Fine Vision (Physiol, Liege, Belgium). Age range between 49 to 85 years. A complete ophthalmology examination was performed preoperatively and postoperatively. The follow-up was 3 months. The main outcome measures were uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) , corrected distance visual acuity(CDVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) and manifest refraction. Defocus curves were assessed under photopic conditions over a range of +1.00 to -4.00 diopters (D) in 0,50 steps. Contrast sensitivity function was assessed under scotopic conditions.

Results:

The monocular visual outcomes (logMAR) at 3 months postoperatively were UDVA 0.07±0.11 in group A and 0.17±0.13 in group B. With the best distance correction, the visual outcomes were 0.02±0.04 in group A and 0.07±0.12 in group B. Both groups had a significant improvement in uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuities postoperatively (p=0.01). Statistically significant differences were not found (p=0.337) between groups in UNVA at 3 months after implantation. The defocus curves showed significantly better visual acuities in the group A at several levels of defocus (p<0.05). There were no significant differences in contrast sensitivity between the two groups (p≥0.09) and the values were within normal range for a population older than 60 years.

Conclusions:

Trifocal IOLs improved near, intermediate and distance vision in presbyopic patients. The use of 3 foci provided significant intermediate visual results without sacrificing near or distance vision. Although the results obtained with both groups of lenses are good at all the distances, better results were obtained with AT LISA tri 839MP in distance and intermediate.
