Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess visual acuity, contrast sensitivity and observations of glistenings in patients who received bilateral toric multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) compared with those that received bilateral implantation of multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs).

Setting:

Clinic/Practice

Methods:

This prospective, nonrandomized, 2-arm, parallel-group, nonmasked study assessed outcomes after bilateral implantation of AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® multifocal toric and nontoric IOLs (Alcon). Patients were aged ≥21 years with bilateral cataracts surgically removed by phacoemulsification and preoperative astigmatism either <0.74 D (nontoric IOL group, n=188) or from ≥0.75 to 2.82 D (toric IOL group, n=386). Assessments included visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and observations of glistenings post implantation.

Results:

At 12 months postimplantation, UCDVA with toric versus nontoric multifocal IOLs was within the clinical performance target margin of 0.1 logMAR. UCDVA was ≤0.12 logMAR with SND1T3/SND1T4 and ≤0.15 logMAR with SND1T5/SND1T6; UCNVA was ≤0.19 logMAR with SND1T3/SND1T4 and ≤0.20 logMAR with SND1T5/SND1T6. No clinically relevant differences in binocular contrast sensitivity under photopic and mesopic conditions with and without a glare source were observed between the AcrySof IQ ReSTOR Multifocal Toric IOL Models SND1T3/ SND1T4/ SND1T5/ SND1T6 and the control AcrySof ReSTOR Multifocal IOL Model SA60D3. 95.7 % of ReSTOR Toric and 97.3% of ReSTOR IOL subjects had no observation of glistenings in the first implanted eye and 96.0% of ReSTOR Toric and 97.3% of ReSTOR IOL subjects had no observation of glistenings in the second implanted eye. None of the observed glistenings were reported as clinically significant by the implanting surgeons.

Conclusions:

AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® +3.0 D multifocal toric IOLs provides good visual acuity at distance and near, binocular contrast sensitivity similar to that of the parent IOL and low observed glistenings.
