Abstract Details
Purpose:
To analyze and report the occurrence of Scratches /Abrasions on the surface of foldable Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) during implantation due to faulty injector cartridges.
Setting:
A private eye hospital in district place in India
Methods:
Foldable IOLs of 4 different brands were evaluated in the OR and in the laboratory for the occurrence of Scratches / Abrasions on the surface of the IOL immediately after implantation. Slit lamp high digital photographs of these lenses were then evaluated on a bi-weekly basis for the extent of abrasions and the behavior of these lenses over a period of 3months.In vitro evaluation of the these IOLS with the scratches and abrasions was performed in laboratory settings. High definition digital microscopic photos of the lenses were taken and analyzed.
Results:
2 of the 4 brands of foldable IOLs tested showed evidence of Scratches over the surface of the lens .The scratches resolved gradually over a period of 3 months in majority of the patients. None of the patients with the IOLS with scratches had any visual complaint.
Microscopic examination of the scratches revealed that the abrasions were in fact deposits on the surface of theses lenses. Further investigation revealed, that the source of these deposits was from the coating of the surface of the faulty cartridges.
Conclusions:
Faulty injector cartridges are responsible for Scratches /Abrasions /deposits over the lens. Even though these scratches were not permanent, they are not acceptable since they can have significant implications. The defective coating over the cartridges was responsible for this entity. The scratch test helps us to identify these faulty cartridges.
