Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the prevalence of cataract after Implantable Collamer lens (ICL, STAAR Surgical, Nidau, Switzerland) implantation in a wide sample of eyes, with different ICL models, at different ages and for different refractive powers.
Setting:
Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Oviedo, Spain.
Methods:
The present study involved 3420 eyes of 1898 patients, 1176 (62%) were women and 722 men (38%) who received a Visian ICL (model V4, V4b and V4c were implanted). The mean age of the patients at the time of surgery was 31.2 ± 6.4 years (range 18 to 78 years) and the mean refractive error was -11.06±5.31 diopters (D; range -20.00 to -1.50 D). Corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) and vault were evaluated
Results:
Twenty one eyes (0.61%) of 15 patients, 4 women and 11 men, had ICL explantation for cataract development. All ICLs explanted were V4 ICL model, the mean age was 39.43±4.57 years (range 29 to 46 years); 9 eyes were less than 40 years old and 12 eyes were 40 years old or more. The mean spherical equivalent was -10.1±5.41 D (range -19.3 to -1 D); 3 eyes had an ICL power less than 10.50 D, 4 eyes had between 10.50 and 13.50 D and 14 had greater than 13.50 D. The mean time between the ICL implantation and cataract surgery was 4.2 ± 1.8 years (range 1 to 7 years). Any eye implanted with the latest models of ICL, V4b and V4c, developed cataract formation after pIOL implantation. The mean vault distance in eyes that developed cataracts was 103 ± 69 µm (range 40 to 270 µm); where 70% of eyes had a vault distance less than 100 µm.
Conclusions:
The incidence of cataract is low with the V4 ICL model and zero for the other ICL models evaluated, V4b and V4c. The prevalence of cataract is higher for older patients and high refractive errors.
