Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the effects of femto second laser small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) (VISUMAX, ZEISS) as compared to laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) (ALLEGRETTO, WAFELIGHT) in treating unilateral myopic anisometropia in children with spectacles or contact lens intolerance.

Setting:

Alpha Vision Center , Zagazig City, Egypt

Methods:

Eighteen eyes of 18 children with unilateral myopic anisometropic amblyopia not successfully treated with the standard amblyopia treatment for 6 months. These children were divided equally and randomly into two groups one underwent LASIK and the other underwent SMILE . They were followed up for 6 months.

Results:

The mean spherical equivalent refraction in the SMILE operated eye had reduced significantly from -9.25 ± 1.54D preoperatively to -0.87 ± .96D at 6 ms postoperatively. There was no statistically difference between the two groups as regard the postoperative refraction. Three cases in LASIK group suffered from flab striae in the 1st week which were treated surgically.

Conclusions:

SMILE is a safe and effective alternative method for correcting myopic anisometropic amblyopia, especially in children with spectacles or contact lens intolerance with less incidence of Lasik flap related complications.
