Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the best corrected visual acuity and complication after Pahymetry Assested Lamellar Keratoplasty (PALK ) technique.

Setting:

Dr Haifa Eye Hospital

Methods:

30 eyes of 30 patients had of advanced keratoconus selected . 14 cases with central corneal scar secondary to advanced stage of keratoconus and acute hydrops included. The procedure performed using topical anesthesia. All cases had ablation volume of host cornea guided by detailed high resolution pachymetry map of SHWIND-CAM module. Full thickness donor cornea devoid of decemets membrane were sutured to recipient bed. Preoperatively and post operatively Best Spectacle Corrected Visual Acuity(BSCVA), refractive status, endothelial cell count, and intra and post operative complication were evaluated.

Results:

3 cases had decemet’s membrane (DM) micro-perforation occurred, no patients required convertion to penetrating keratoplasty, and no stromal rejection occurred. Patients followed up from 12 to 24 months. Uncorrected Visual Acuity (UCVA) improved 12 lines in 75% of cases and 3 lines BSCVA in 62% of cases.

Conclusions:

PALK system appears to be safe and effective procedure in keratoconus cases, with shorter surgical time.
