Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess visual performance and subjective experience of patients implanted with a new bi-aspheric, segmented, multifocal intraocular lens (MIOL): the SBL-3

Setting:

Private clinic, Solihull, United Kingdom.

Methods:

Patients (average age 62.2 ± 11.1 years) were monocularly (n=7) or binocularly (n=10) implanted with the SBL-3 MIOL. Three months post-implantation, assessment was made of: manifest refraction; uncorrected (UCDVA) and best corrected (BCDVA) distance visual acuity; uncorrected (UCNVA) and best corrected (BCNVA) near visual acuity; defocus curves - range +1.5 to -5.0 D in 0.5 Dioptres (D) in randomised increments and letters; Pelli-Robson contrast sensitivity (CS); halometry, using randomised letters and 45 degree increments; and patient’s satisfaction with unaided near vision, using the Near Acuity Visual Questionnaire (NAVQ).

Results:

Mean residual manifest refraction was +0.06 ± 0.45D. Two-thirds of eyes fell within a mean spherical equivalent (MSE) of ±0.25D and 81% were within a MSE of ±0.50D. Mean UCDVA was +0.07 ± 0.14 logMAR. Mean UCNVA was J3, and BCNVA was J2. One hundred percent of binocularly implanted patients had binocular UCNVA J2. Mean CS was 1.66 ±0.13 log units. Halometry showed a glare profile of less than 1 degree of debilitating light scatter. Mean NAVQ Rasch score for satisfaction for near vision was 20.9 ± 18.1 logits.

Conclusions:

The SBL-3 MIOL provides a good visual outcome at distance and near with minimal dysphotopsia. Patients were very satisfied with their uncorrected near vision.
