Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the visual outcomes and complications of refractive clear lens extraction by phacoaspiration and multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation.

Setting:

Centro de Oftalmologia Barraquer in Barcelona.

Methods:

It is a retrospective study. We included 414 eyes which underwent refractive clear lens extraction and multifocal IOL implantation from February 2008 to January 2014. First, they were separated in myopic or hyperopic refraction, and in each group there were classified in high, mild or low graduation. The refraction, spherical equivalent (SE), uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), intermediate and near visual acuity (VA) and distance, intermediate and near uncorrected binocular visual acuity (UBVA) in the preop and postop (1 month, 12 months and 2 years) were analyzed.

Results:

In high myopic eyes the preop CDVA was 0,61±0,19 and the postop UDVA was 0,53±0,21 , 0,57±0,28 and 0,54±0,23 at 1month, 12 months and 2 years respectively. In the mild myopic eyes the preop CDVA was 0,78±0,22 and the postop UDVA was 0,68±0,26, 0,65±0,31 and 0,58±0,23 at 1 month, 12 months and 2 years respectively. In the low myopic eyes the preop CDVA was 0,88±0,27 and the postop UDVA was 0,62±0,30, 0,71±0,28 and 0,68±0,22 at 1 month, 12 months and 2 years respectively. In the high hyperopic eyes the preop CDVA was 0,71±0,22 and the postop UDVA was 0,53±0,24, 0,51±0,24 and 0,56±0,21 at 1 month, 12 months and 2 years respectively. In the mild hyperopic eyes the preop CDVA 0,91±0,14 and the postop UDVA was 0,74±0,21 at 1 month, 12 months and 2 years. In the low hyperopic eyes the preop UDVA was 0,98±0,12 and the postop UDVA was 0,80±0,24, 0,77±0,23 and 0,83±0,23 at 1 month, 12 months and 2 years respectively. The distance UBVA in both groups are in all cases better than 0,7. In the myopic group the intermediate UBVA was J2 and J3 and hyperopic was mostly J2. The near UBVA was mostly J1 in both groups.

Conclusions:

The multifocal IOL provides good uncorrected distance, intermediate and near vision outcome, Although CDVA preop is better than UDVA postop, glasses independence is possible with this technique.
