To evaluate the effect of eyelid squeezing on corneal topography.

Design of the study was comparative case series. 80 patients with a mean age of 25.8 years old who were referred to the refractive surgery clinic with myopia refractive error were recruited. The study population was divided into two groups: The first group included 40 consecutive patients who wore glasses most of the time. The second group consisted of 40 consecutive patients who had a myopic refractive error (spherical equivalent) of more than 1.5 Diopters; and instead of using glasses squeezed to get better vision and had not used glasses for the last 6 months or more. All patients underwent topographic imaging and refraction. Twelve topographic indices and refraction were compared between the two groups.


Patients of the second group had higher astigmatism compared to those of the first group. Five topographic indices (inferior superior index, Surface Asymmetry Index, Surface Regularity Index, Opposite Sector Index, Irregular Astigmatism Index) were significantly higher in the second group, indicating a more irregular cornea. Subjects in the second group also had a significantly higher superior steepening rate.


This study reveals that in a normal population long-time eye squeezing habit can influence the degree of astigmatism, corneal topography, and I-S index as well as other corneal irregularity indices.
