Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze changes in intraocular pressure after cataract surgery with data from the Swedish National Cataract Register (NCR).

Setting:

Ophthalmic surgery units in Sweden reporting to NCR.

Methods:

: Data were collected prospectively in NCR from year 2012 and 2013. In the outcome register of NCR intraocular pressure (IOP) have been registered before and after cataract surgery since 2012.

Results:

: The analyses were based on 13300 cataract extractions reported to the outcome register of NCR. Cataract surgery had an IOP lowering effect with 1.44 mm Hg which is statistically significant (p<0.001). Higher preoperative IOP have larger IOP reduction (p<0.001, r=0.556). Older patients and shorter eyes showed more IOP reduction after surgery. When high IOP was given as an indication for surgery the IOP reduction after cataract surgery was 6.42 mm Hg compared to controls with a reduction of 1.37 mm Hg (p<0.001) . Patients with glaucoma or pseudoexfoliation had a more pronounced IOP reduction compared to controls (p<0.001).

Conclusions:

: Cataract surgery has a lowering effect of IOP particularly in old patients, short eyes, high preoperative IOP, and in eyes with glaucoma or pseudoexfoliation.
