Abstract Details

Purpose:

The refractive outcome after phakic intraocular lens (PIOL) implantation require sometimes enhancement for optimal results. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of Laser-Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratectomy (LASEK) in eyes with residual ametropia after phakic IOL (PIOL) implantation.

Setting:

Refractive surgery Centre

Methods:

Eyes who required enhancement after PIOL implantation were identified. The preoperative, operation, and postoperative data was abstracted.

Results:

Twenty-eight eyes of 21 patients were identified. All eyes underwent LASEK at least 3 months after the implantation of PIOL. The PIOLs included ICL (n=6), Artisan (n=15), toric Artisan (n=2), and Ariflex (n=5). Pre-PIOL the sphere was between -30D to +15.25D, and astigmatism -0.5D to -3.5D. Prior to the laser enhancement, the mean sphere was 0.62D (-5.50 D to +2.00D) and the mean refractive astigmatism was -1.54D (-0.5D to -3.25D). On the last postoperative follow-up visit the mean sphere was +0.110.39D and the mean spherical equivalent was +0.060.42. The mean uncorrected visual acuity was 0.690.16 (decimals) and the best corrected visual acuity was 0.75 0.14, while the safety index was 1 and the efficacy index was 0.93.

Conclusions:

LASEK is a safe and effective procedure to correct residual ametropia after PIOL implantation. It may serve as a viable option to enhance the refractive results in patients with previous high refractive errors who didn't reach the target refraction after PIOL implantation.
