Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of our study was the evaluation of changes in the activities of everyday life and satisfaction with vision in patients after bilateral cataract surgery followed by posterior chamber implantation of multifocal toric intraocular lenses (IOL): M-FLEX T (Rayner, UK).

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, University Center of Ophthalmology and Oncology Medical University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland

Methods:

The analyzed material consisted of 30 eyes in 15 patients, mean age 57.6, implanted with multifocal toric IOL M-FLEX T (Rayner, UK), the addition for near vision was +4,0D. The follow up time was 12-28 months. Patients motivated to reduced their dependency on glasses, with astigmatism higher than 1.5D were qualified for presbyopia correction with multifocal toric IOL implantation. Visual acuity at different distances (UCDVA, BCDVA, UCNVA, UCIVA), contrast sensitivity test and the patients’ satisfaction with VF-14 test were evaluated. Scale of response was from 0 (not at all difficult) to 4 (not possible to perform without glasses). The score ranged from 0 to 100

Results:

There was no coincidence between changes of the distance visual acuity and measures of the quality of life with the VF-14 index. Patients satisfaction was high. The mean contrast sensitivity improved postoperatively in all spatial frequencies (from 1.20, 1.28, 0.83, 038 pre-op to 1.48, 1.70,1.04, 0.40 post-op respectively). Postoperative changes in UCDVA, BCDVA and UCIVA to the preop values was statistically significant (p<0.05). UCDVA po-stop was 0.99, BCDVA 1.0 in comparison to the mean pre-op values 0.33 and 0.61 respectively. UCNVA postoperative was in 85% of eyes J2, UCIVA was satisfied in91% of eyes

Conclusions:

The implantation of the multifocal toric IOL: is good option for middle-aged patients motivated to reduce their dependency on glasses; patients satisfaction and visual function index is very high. The high level of the patients’ satisfaction confirms the purposefulness of the surgery
