Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the visual outcomes with a new rotationally asymmetric multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) design implanted bilaterally (SBL-3, Lenstec Barbados Inc. ). This is a dual optic, bi-aspheric acrylic IOL with a +3.0 dioptre (D) near add.

Methods:

Eight patients (16 eyes) underwent refractive lens exchange surgery performed by a single surgeon with bilateral SBL-3 implantation. Pre- and post-operative data collection included manifest refraction, monocular uncorrected distance (UDVA) and near (UNVA) visual acuity, corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), distance corrected near vision (DCNVA) and best corrected near vision (BCNVA). Operative and post-operative complication rates were recorded. Patient satisfaction was also assessed.

Results:

Eight patients, mean age 60 years (range 49-67 years) underwent uncomplicated bilateral SBL-3 IOL implantation. The pre-operative manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE) was +1.90 ±2.02D (range -1.25 to +6.13D). Post-operative MRSE was -0.46 ± 0.20D. All eyes were within ±1.0D and 62.5% were within ±0.5D of target refraction. Monocular visual results were UDVA 20/40 or better in 93.75% of eyes and 20/20 or better in 31.25% of eyes. CDVA was 20/40 or better in 100% of eyes and 20/20 or better in 93.75% of eyes. With regard to near vision, 75.0% of eyes achieved N5 or better UNVA, 81.25% of eyes had DCNVA of N5 or better and 93.75% had BCNVA of N5 or better. One eye had mild transient cystoid macular oedema that resolved with treatment. Two eyes had some posterior capsular opacification. YAG laser capsulotomy had not been performed at the time of data collection. All patients were satisfied with their post-operative visual outcome and spectacle independence for both distance and near vision.

Conclusions:

The preliminary results are encouraging and the Lenstec SBL-3 ® holds promise as an effective way to improve both unaided distance and near vision in patients undergoing refractive lens exchange surgery. Optimisation of biometry constants should help to further enhance outcomes.
