Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate visual outcome after implantation of a aspheric multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) with low addition power

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Haeundae Paik Hospital, Inje University College of Medicine, Busan, South Korea

Methods:

Consecutive eyes with cataract had implantation of multifocal IOL (LS-313MF15; Oculentis, Germany). Assessments including distance, intermediate, and near visual acuities, defocus curve, and contrast sensitivity were done 1 week, 1 month, 3 month, and 6 months postoperatively. A quality-of-vision questionnaire was also obtained 6 months postoperatively.

Results:

The mean best corrected distant visual acuity (logMAR) was -0.07 at 5 m, -0.07 at 2 m, -0.07 at 1 m, -0.07 at 70 Cm, 0.49 at 50 Cm, 0.55 at 40 Cm, 0.50 at 33 Cm. The defocus curve had a plateau of optimum vision from 70 Cm to 5 m and near vision slightly dropped off. Photopic contrast sensitivity for distance was reduced at high frequencies but comparable to that of monofocal IOLs. No patients reported severe difficulty with any of lifestyle activities, however, 36.2% of patients reported moderate difficulty for reading or near work.

Conclusions:

The aspheric multifocal IOL with low addition power provide excellent distant and intermediate vision with tolerable near vision, and enable patients to be comfortable in any lifestyle activities.
