Abstract Details

Purpose:

to evaluate visual acuity, defocus curve, contrast sensitivity and patient satisfaction after bilateral and monolateral implantation of a multifocal IOL (MIOLs) with an additional power of 1.5 diopters (LS-313 MF15) in patients scheduled for standard cataract surgery without any selection except for macular function

Setting:

Ophthalmology Unit, department of Neurosciences, University of Verona, Verona Italy

Methods:

21 patients (38 eyes) with cataract undergoing bilateral (17) and monolateral (4) facoemulsification and implantated with LS-313 MF15 IOL. Patient selection was based only on the presence of a good macular function and absence of particular ocular diseases such corneal irregularity and opacity, iris and zonular defects. Every patients submitted to a post operatively follow-up of 6 months during which were evaluated: uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UNDVA/BCDVA); uncorrected and corrected near visual acuity (UNVA/CNVA) at 30 cm, uncorrected and corrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA/CIVA) at 70 cm. It were also determined contrast sensibility (CS), defocus curve and patients satisfaction (National Eye Institute questionnaire NEI RQL-42).

Results:

All patient achieved an average uncorrected distance visual acuity of 0.95 (Snellen) with a residual spherical equivalent refractive error of -0,15 ¬ ± 0,3 and an uncorrected near visual acuity at 30 cm of 5,6 ± 2,15 (Jaeger) and 4,6 ± 2,7 (Jaeger) at 70 cm . Defocus curve and contrast sensitivity showed a good level of spectacle independence and a good quality of vision in all cases. The LS-313 MF15 IOL implantation achieved excellent results in terms of uncorrected distance and intermediate visual acuity while a mean addiction of +1 D is requested for near vision. Patients reported not significant visual disturbance, spectacle independence and high satisfaction

Conclusions:

the LS-313 MF15 IOL can be considered a valid option as a standard IOL in normal routine cataract surgery without the necessity of a particular patients selection and counseling typical of the other MIOLs.
