Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the safety, efficacy, predictability and refractive outcome after implanting an Iris-claw foldable toric phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs) in astigmatic myopic eyes: 12 months results.

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Paracelsus Medical University, Salzburg, Austria.

Methods:

100 myopic astigmatic eyes of 57 patients with a mean age of 36 years (range 18-53 years) underwent implantation of an iris-fixated toric foldable phakic intraocular lens. Uncorrected (UDVA) and Best Corrected (CDVA) Visual Acuity, biomicroscopy, tonometry and Endothelial Cell Count were assessed preoperatively and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively.

Results:

After 12 months the mean spherical equivalent changed from preoperatively mean -8,67 D ± 2,51 D (-2,63 to -13,69) to mean -0,10 D ± 0,32 D (-1,25 to +0,88) and the mean cylinder from mean 1,99 D ± 0,83 D (+1,00 to+ 5,00) to mean 0,24 D ± 0,29 D (0,00 to +1,00). 98% of eyes achieved an UDVA of ≥ 20/25 Snellen lines, no eye lost any line in CDVA, 70% gained ≥ 1 line in CDVA. Mean ECC density remained stable at the 12 months follow up. There were no severe complications.

Conclusions:

The foldable, toric Iris fixated phakic lens seems to offer a safe, predictable, effective and stable refractive treatment after 12 months.
