Abstract Details

Purpose:

Acess predictability, efficacy, safety and stability in patients who received a implantable collamer lens (ICL) V4C model to correct moderate to high myopia and astigmatism.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department of Hospital de Braga, Portugal.

Methods:

Retrospective study of patients who have been submitted to ICL V4C (STAAR Surgical Inc.®) implantation for myopia and astigmatism correction. Inclusion criteria are related to age between 20 and 45 years old, clear lens, ACD > 2.8mm, myopia >6.0D and/or astigmatism >1.5D and stable refraction. Main outcomes measures evaluated during 12 months of follow-up included uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), subjective refraction, vault evaluation and adverse events. Lens power was calculated based on subjective refraction, anterior chamber depth (ACD) and keratometric measurements obtained with corneal topography (Pentacam® HR, Oculus). Lens diameter was choosen according to the horizontal angle-angle distance and ACD calculated with anterior chamber OCT (Visante Omni®, Carls Zeiss).

Results:

We analysed 23 eyes of 16 patients who underwent implantation of ICL V4C (STAAR Surgical Inc.®) for myopia and astigmatism correction. Spherical ICL was implanted in 14 eyes and toric ICL in 9 eyes. Surgery was performed under topical anesthesia, the IOL was implanted through a 3.20 mm temporal corneal incision. Mean ACD was 3,395 mm. Mean Snellen decimal UCVA was 0.96±0.084 and 0.89 after spherical and toric ICL implantation, respectively. Safety and efficacy index was > 1.00. After surgery, the spherical equivalent ranges from 0 to +0.75D. The mean vault was 460±10.75 µm and was no tendency of vault changing over time. No vision-threatening complications occurred.

Conclusions:

Implantation of ICL was safe and effective and provided medium-term predictable, stable refractive results.
