Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the efficacies of straight flattened tip (introduced by Dr. Kishimoto) and angled Celman non-flared tip.

Setting:

Saint-Petersburg’s Branch of S.N.Fyodorov’s State Institution Eye Microsurgery Complex, Saint-Petersburg, Russia.

Methods:

33 patients underwent bimanual torsional phacoemulsification. One half of the nucleus was removed using the straight flattened tip, and the other half was removed using non-flared Celman tip. After each hemisphere removal, cumulative dissipated energy (CDE), aspiration time, and the volume of the consumed fluid were measured.

Results:

Use of flattened (Kishimoto's) tip was associated with significantly higher CDE and aspiration time, but lower consumption of fluid (p<0.05), as compared with the bent tip.

Conclusions:

Motion amplitude of the straight flattened tip is presumably lower than the one of the angled tip. Kishimoto's tip reduces chatter, therefore keeping the nuclear pieces on the tip's bevel; however, it more time and energy are required to aspirate these pieces.
