Session Title: Pseudophakic IOLs/ Multifocals I

Session Date/Time: Monday 15/09/2014 | 16:30-18:30

Paper Time: 18:08

Venue: Boulevard A

Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of this study is to evaluate an innovative approach to the treatment of presbyopia based on a proprietary wavefront technology. Engineered intraocular lens optic designs with a continuum of focii have been developed and tested. Results showed that limitations of traditional multifocal intraocular lenses can be overcome.

Setting:

Laboratory R&D SIFI MEDTECH, Aci S.Antonio, Catania, Italy

Methods:

Patented technologies of wavefront engineering have been applied to develop an innovative intraocular lens optic. Optimization of depth of focus and simulation of visual acuity have been carried out. Simulation and test have been performed taking into account the lens position error.

Results:

Retinal acuity charts through focus showed no significant contrast reduction for all vision conditions. Glare and halos were considered negligible. Lens optic performance was invariant within a lens position error of ±0,5 mm of decentration and ± 2,5° of tilt.

Conclusions:

This innovative wavefront engineered intraocular lens countervails the traditional multifocality and gives possibility of considering a new trend in premium lenses applications. In conclusion this type of lens can represent an option for all presbyopic patiens, not only with a cataractous crystalline lens.
