Session Title: Pseudophakic IOLs/ Multifocals I

Session Date/Time: Monday 15/09/2014 | 16:30-18:30

Paper Time: 17:28

Venue: Boulevard A

First Author: : T.Morozova RUSSIA

Abstract Details

Purpose:

to evaluate distance, intermediate, near visual outcomes, contrast sensitivity, optical phenomena and spectacle independence in patients who received GRIN (gradient refraction index) multifocal intraocular lens ( IOL).

Setting:

S.Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery Complex State Institution, Russia.

Methods:

Prospective study included 50 eyes (39 patients). IOL optical part is composed of one polymer with different refraction index. Power difference between components -3.5 diopters. Intraocular lens has C-loop design with 2 haptic elements. Overall IOL diameter is 12.0 mm. Mean age of patients was 68 years (range: 52-79). We evaluated uncorrected аnd the best spectacle corrected visual aquity (VA) for far, near and intermediate distances, spheroequivalent (SE), contrast sensitivity (CS) and amplitude of pseudoaccommodation. Also we assessed quality of vision, glare, halos and the personal satisfaction of the patients.

Results:

Three months after implantation mean uncorrected distance VA was 0.78 , mean uncorrected near VA 0.65, mean uncorrected intermediate VA 0.58, mean corrected distance VA was 0.89, mean corrected near VA 0.82, mean corrected intermediate VA 0.81. SE was -0.58 D, mean CS was 41.8. Mean amplitude of pseudoaccommodation was 4,57 diopters. 86% patients with multifocal gradient IOL did not need glasses for daily activities, driving and reading. Questionnaire revealed optical phenomena in post-op in 6 eyes.

Conclusions:

The study found high functional results and optical performance after use of GRIN multifocal lenses, high spectacle independence and low incidence of optical phenomena. THE AUTHORS HAVE NO FINANCIAL INTEREST.
