Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate and compare the visual outcomes and quality of life after bilateral implantation of hydrophobic trifocal IOL and hydrophilic aspheric bifocal IOL

Setting:

This prospective study was conducted at a Dr Arvind Vision Care eye hospital in Chennai, India

Methods:

In a prospective study 60 patients were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 consisting of 30 patients was implanted hydrophobic trifocal acrylic lens in both eyes and group 2 were implanted hydrophilic aspheric bifocal IOL in both eyes. Visual acuity, contrast sensitivity was recorded at 1 month and 3 months. Quality of life (QOL) was assessed with National Eye Institute Vision Related Quality of Life Instrument (NEI-VRQOL) at 3 months after the second surgery.

Results:

The mean spherical equivelants were+0.12 D and +0.18 D in Group 1 and Group 2 respectively at 3 months. The contrast sensitivity at mesopic condition was favourable for bifocal group. (p <0.05) The quality of life assessment were similar across all sub scales of VRQOL.

Conclusions:

The trifocal and bifocal lenses provide good quality of vision and the VRQOL shows no difference between these 2 lenses.
