Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the effect of a diffractive multifocal IOL decentration on the optical quality by an optical bench test

Setting:

Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, Seoul, Korea

Methods:

A ReSTOR +3.0 D was used in this experiment as a diffractive multifocal IOL. The image of a USAF resolution target passed through the artificial pupil and IOL in the wet chamber filled with normal saline (model eye) and finally focused on the camera. Pupil size was set 1.8 (small), 3.6 (normal), 5.4 mm (large) by adjusting artificial pupil aperture. After centering the IOL by alignment laser, we made 0.0 mm, 1.0 mm, 2.0 mm decentration by translation stage of IOL mounting system. In each setting, we made defocus by mounting the trial lenses in front of the model eye and made defocus (for far, intermediate and near vision simulation) and captured the USAF resolution images. The optical quality was quantified by correlation coefficient using the captured images.

Results:

1) Pupil size 3.6 mm Without decentration, the multifocal function was definite with double peak of optical quality at near and far vision. As the decentration increases to 1.0, 2.0 mm, the optical quality at near distance decreased much more than far distance. For 2.0 mm decentration, the multifocal function of IOL disapreared. 2) Pupil size 1.8 mm As the decentration increases to 1.0, 2.0 mm, the overall optical quality decreased much more than normal pupil (3.6 mm). 3) Pupil size 5.4 mm Although the decentration increased to 1.0, 2.0 mm, the overall optical quality showed little change.

Conclusions:

In conclusion, for small pupil, the optical quality is sensitive to IOL decentration but for large pupil, optical quality is insensitive to IOL decentration.
