Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the outcome of Phacoemulsification in cataracts with Corneal opacity

Setting:

Vasan Eye Care Hospital Koramangala, Bangalore, INDIA

Methods:

Study included 25 cases of cataract with corneal opacity of various grades. All underwent Phacoemulsification with foldable IOL by a single surgeon. Intra-operative and post operative complications were analysed

Results:

Majority of patients had Grade 2-3 nuclear sclerosis. 5 cases had Mature cataract, 2 cases had adherent leucoma 1 case Pseudoexfoliation cataract. 15 Cases had pupillary diameter > 5mm. No intra-operative complications were seen. Transient corneal edema was seen in 7 cases. Visual acuity of 6/12 was seen 17 cases.

Conclusions:

Phaco in cases with corneal opacity is challenging. Good results can be obtained in these cases by proper planning, adjusting illumination and altering phaco techniques
