Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the influence of two different Intraocular lens (IOL-) designs on post-operative IOL stability concerning IOL tilt and decentration in patients with Pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PES).

Setting:

Vienna Institute for Research in Ocular Surgery, Department of Ophthalmology, Hanusch Hospital, Vienna

Methods:

This randomised trial included patients diagnosed with PES who were scheduled for cataract surgery. One eye of each patient was allocated to the test group in which the Tecnis 1-piece ZCB00 (AMO, USA) was implanted while the other eye was allocated to the control group in which the Acrysof SA60AT (ALCON, USA) was implanted. Both IOLs are hydrophobic acrylic open loop IOLs. The main difference between the IOLs is the anterior surface curvature. Aim of this study was to assess differences in IOL tilt and decentration 1 hour and 3 months post-operatively between the test and the control group. Furthermore aqueous flare was measured one hour and 3 months post-operatively.

Results:

Fourty eyes of 20 patients were included. Mean decentration of the test IOL and the control IOL 1 hour post-operatively was 0.4 ± 0.1mm and 0.4 ± 0.4mm and 3 months post-operatively 0.5 ± 0.2mm and 0.3 ± 0.2mm. These differences were not found to be significant (p=0.99 und p=0.64). Results of IOL tilt will be presented. Mean aqueous flare pre-operatively, 1 hour and 3 months post-operatively in the test group and in the control group were 4.8 ± 1.5pc/ms, 9.8 ± 5.9pc/ms and 4.3 ± 3.0pc/ms and 4.3 ± 2.2pc/ms, 6.9 ± 6.2pc/ms and 4.1 ± 0.02pc/ms, respectively. These differences were not found to be significant (p=0.50, p=0.07 und p=0.94).

Conclusions:

In eyes with Pseudoexfoliation syndrome no significant differences concerning IOL decentration and aqueous flare were found between the test and the control IOL.
