Abstract Details

Purpose:

Purpose of the study was to evaluate the rotational stability of two intraocular lenses (IOLs) of similar design and material, but a difference of 1mm in overall length.

Setting:

Hanusch Hospital, Vienna VIROS Institute

Methods:

In this prospective study patients with age-related cataract were included. An IOL of 12mm overall diameter (ACR-6 = small diamter IOL) was compared to an IOL of 13mm overall diameter (IDEA 613 XC = large diamter IOL) both Croma-Pharma GmbH, Austria). Retroillumination photography were taken1 hour and 3 months after surgery with a high-resolution digital retroillumination imaging system.

Results:

In total, 60 patients were included in this study. Absolute rotation in the small and the large diameter groups was 4.35° (SD: 3.99°; range: 0.25° to 17.75°) and 3.01°(SD: 2.36°; range: 0.10° to 7.80°), respectively. The differences between the two IOLs were not found to be statistically significant. However, it was shown that in the small diameter IOL group, rotation of more than 10° occurred in some eyes, whereas this was not the case in the large diameter IOL group.

Conclusions:

The effect of overall length appears to have little impact in early rotation after cataract surgery.
