Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study long-term results of implantation of toric IOLs in children with cataract complicated by corneal astigmatism.

Setting:

Department of Pediatric Ophthalmology, Ufa Eye Research Institute, Ufa, Russia.

Methods:

The results of surgical treatment of 37 children with cataracts complicated by corneal astigmatism (43 eyes) were studied. Marking of the optical axis of the toric IOL was made by applying laser-coagulants on the conjunctiva of the eyeball. The age of operated children ranged from 4 to 16 years. Corneal astigmatism ranged from 1.75 В to 5.5 D. The observation period was 6 to 36 months. Alcon Toric ( 25 ), Raener T-flex ( 12 ), Tecnis Toric ( 6) IOL were used.

Results:

The average error in the position of the optical axis of the toric IOL in 5-7 days after surgery was 3.4 degrees. 6 months after the operation axis deviation was 3.7 degrees. No difference in the position error of the optical axis of the toric IOLs Alcon Toric, Raener T-flex, Tecnis Toric was shown. The average visual acuity before the surgery was 0.08. After 5-7 days the visual acuity improved to 0.55. 6 months after the operation the visual acuity without correction was 0.69 and with correction 0.74.

Conclusions:

The use of toric IOLs with laser marking of optical axis in children provides high functional results. In long-term follow up no significant differences in the optical axis position error of toric IOLs Alcon Toric, Raener T-flex, Tecnis Toric were detected.
