A new intraocular lens design for femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS)

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present a new lens design that is specifically suited to FLACS, which has become widely accepted due to it’s advantages over traditional phaco surgery with manual capsulorrhexis.

Methods:

Discussion of a new lens concept that has been developed especially for use with FLACS. The lens is made from a hydrosmart material with a 25% water content, and has a 5.7 mm optical diameter within a 10.5 mm total diameter. The optic has an biconvex aberration-neutral aspheric design. The lens is fixed at the edges of the laser capsulotomy after implantation within the capsular bag.

Results:

FLACS has become widely accepted due to its advantages over traditional phaco-surgery. The use of a femstosecond laser vs. manual capsulorrhexis can guarantee a precise and reproducable capsolotomy at a given size before cataract or clear lens surgery. Femtosecondlaser assisted nucleus fragmentation can lead to a substantial reduction in ultrasound energy reducing potentially harmful energy to the corneal endothelium. The fixation of the lens within the capsulotomy may deliver a far better stabilization of the lens optic preventing any shifts or rotation.

Conclusions:

A perfect and stable centration of the lens within the caspular bag is desirable and important for optimal visual results, especially true for aspheric IOL‘s, toric and multifocal IOL`s. The lens idea presented is the first example of a design which only can be used when performing cataract surgery with a femtosecond laser.
