Abstract Details

Purpose:

To share our initial experience with femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery in 168 eyes.

Setting:

Susrut Eye Foundation And Research Centre,Kolkata,West Bengal,India.

Methods:

168 eyes undergoing femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery with Lensx (Alcon) between October 2012 and June 2013 were included in the study. The cases underwent anterior capsulotomy, lens fragmentation, and corneal incisions with the femtosecond laser. The procedure was completed by phacoemulsification and insertion of an intraocular lens. Data were collected about patient demographics, preoperative investigations and postoperative follow up.Post op follow up was done on day 1, 3 and after 7 days. Post op BCVA was recorded after 7 days .

Results:

This study describes our initial experience of femtosecond assisted cataract surgery. 168 eyes (RE:LE=96:72) of 157 patients(M:F=101:56),age 42 to 87 years (mean 64.16) were included. Nuclear grade was less than or equal to II in 45 eyes, and more than grade II in 123 eyes. Primary incision width varied from 2.7 to 2.9mm, arcuate cuts given in 35 eyes, and capsulorhexis diameter varied from 4.2mm to 5.5mm. Fragmentation pattern was cylinder in 6 eyes, chop in 101 eyes and combined in 57 eyes and no fragmentation was done in 4 eyes. 148 eyes were implanted with monofocal IOLs, 17 eyes with multifocal IOLs and 3 eyes received toric IOL. Surgically induced astigmatism, calculated from 22 eyes without arcuate cuts, was 0.4 D RE and 0.32 D LE. Among 149 eyes which completed 1 month follow up, final BCVA was 6/6 in 45 eyes(30.2%),6/9 in 72 eyes(48.3%),6/12 in 26 eyes(17.4%) and worse in 6 eyes. 1 eye had incomplete CCC,3 had inadequate fragmentation and 3 had incomplete incision.

Conclusions:

There is short but definite learning curve for femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery, no significant sight threating complications and excellent visual outcome.
