Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze in silico, in vitro and in vivo the behavior of a new double-C-loop symmetric platform in combination with hydrophilic and hydrophobic acrylic lens materials.

Setting:

Methods:

Double-C-loop quadripod lenses made of a new hydrophobic acrylic glistening-free material (GF from Physiol SA, Belgium) and from a hydrophilic acrylic material, Podeye and Ankoris, respectively were tested. The lenses were tested in silico, in vitro and in vivo (in a rabbit model) for their properties - mechanical (radial haptic compression forces, axial position, optic centration) and biological (resistance to posterior capsular opacification, rotational stability, degree of haptic-tissue contact). In silico simulation investigation was performed by finite elements software. In vitro investigation was realized by standardizes micromechanical tests. In vivo implantation was performed in rabbit model and the results were followed for 4 weeks. Post-mortem data were collected by Miyake-Apple gross examination and histopathological analyses.

Results:

Both lenses demonstrated statistically insignificant variations in terms of posterior and anterior capsular opacification, and Sommering’s rings formation. They were very well biotolerated with no signs of toxicity, inflammation and neovascularization. Both lenses demonstrated good rotational, axial and centration stability in vitro and in vivo as result of significant contact between surrounding tissues, and haptics and posterior optic portion.

Conclusions:

Double-C-loop symmetric quadripod platform naturally provides the IOL with rotational, axial and centration stability, regardless of the lens material. In combination with appropriately selected lens material, it is a suitable candidate for special optic (Premium) lenses.
