Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess intraocular lens (IOL) centration (capsular bag and sulcus) in cases of primary (Duet) or secondary implantation of a sulcus-fixated supplementary IOL.

Setting:

Academic Teaching Hospital of St. John, Vienna, Austria

Methods:

In this retrospective image analysis study, 23 eyes of 23 patients who were implanted with a sulcus-fixated supplementary IOL, Sulcoflex (Rayner Intraocular Lenses Limited, UK) were evaluated. The mean follow-up was 3.2 years. (range 9 mon – 5.3 years) The geometric center of both the capsular bag- and sulcus-fixated IOLs was measured with the image analysis program Adobe Photoshop CS6. This measurement was compared with the geometric center of the pupil and the limbus.

Results:

The mean age of the patients was 64 ± 13.9 years (range 37 – 85 years and 43% were male, with 57% being female. There were no intra- or postoperative complications in any cases. The mean decentration of the capsular bag-fixated IOL was 0.097 mm (± 0.016 SEM) when compared with the limbus and 0.101 mm (± 0,016 SEM) when compared with the dilated pupil. The mean decentration of the sulcus-fixated IOL was 0.076 mm ( ± 0.01 SEM) when compared with the limbus and 0.064 mm ( ± 0.012 SEM) when compared with the dilated pupil. There was no significant difference in decentration between the two IOLs.

Conclusions:

Both capsular bag-fixated and ciliary sulcus-fixated IOLs showed good centration in eyes implantated with a sulcus-fixated supplementary IOL. Furthermore, the absence of intra- or postoperative complications in all cases confirms the safety of the Sulcoflex Supplementary IOL.
