Correction of pseudophakic refractive errors with a sulcus-fixated supplementary IOL: 5 year follow-up

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate the outcomes of a hydrophilic acrylic, foldable, single piece, sulcus-fixated supplementary posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) (Sulcoflex Aspheric, Rayner Intraocular Lenses Limited, UK) after up to 5 years of follow-up.

Setting:

Academic Teaching Hospital of St. John, Vienna, Austria

Methods:

This prospective, non-randomised, study included 113 eyes that received a secondary IOL (Sulcoflex Aspheric, 653L) to correct residual refractive error, post cataract surgery. Clinical and refractive outcomes were evaluated. All IOLs were implanted with an injector through a 2.75 mm clear cornea incision in the ciliary sulcus. Postoperative examinations were performed after 1 and 6 months, and a further follow-up occurred between 1 ,3 to 5 years. Assessments included uncorrected (UCVA) and best-corrected (BCVA) visual acuity, specular microscopy, and scheimpflug photography.

Results:

Surgeries were performed without any complication in all cases. There were no patient complications at the final post-operative visit. The mean follow-up was 3.47 years. (range 6 mon – 5.3 years ). The mean age was 58.3 years (range 33 – 89 years). No intra- or postoperative complications were detected, and target refraction (± 0.25 dpt ) was achieved in all cases, with stable refractions. Flare values were lower than the values measured after standard cataract procedures. Centration through slit lamp assessment at all post-operative visits was excellent. Intraocular pressure was within the normal range at all visits. No iris chafing was documented and in all cases a good distance was observed between the iris and the Sulcoflex Pseudophakic Supplementary IOL. 3 eyes had shown slight pigment dispersion anterior surface of the supplementary IOL. Similarly, a good distance was observed between the supplementary IOL and the primary implant. No additive IOL exchange was necessary.

Conclusions:

The Sulcoflex Aspheric IOL was well-tolerated in all study eyes. Secondary implantation of the Sulcoflex IOL in the ciliary sulcus was a safe and predictable option for patients with pseudophakic refractive errors
