Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the changes in corneal wavefront aberrations in highly myopic eyes after treatment with femtosecond lenticule extraction (SMILE) and FS-LASIK
Setting:
Private Eye Clinic
Methods:
One eye of 20 highly myopic patients was randomly assigned to refractive correction with femtosecond lenticule extraction (SMILE) while the fellow eye was assigned to refractive correction with FS-LASIK. Corneal Wavefront Aberrations were examined pre-operatively, and one year after the refractive correction.
Results:
There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups except for the Z(4,2) aberration in the left eyes. Post-operatively, there were no differences between the two groups on spherical aberration Z(4,0) and other 3rd and 4th order aberrations, except the horizontal coma. However, there were differences between the aberrations induced in the right and left eyes. In the right eyes, Vertical Coma, Z(3,1), was significantly different (p<0.06) in the FS-LASIK group(0.236+/-0.72) and the SMILE group(-0.37+/-0.44). In the left eyes, there was a significant difference in the horizontal coma, Z(3,-1) between the FS-LASIK(1.04+/-0.43) and SMILE groups(0.388+/-0.26). Spherical aberration was induced in both groups, but there were no significant differences between both groups with regards to Z(4, 0).
Conclusions:
Corneal Wavefront Aberrations are induced after refractive correction, both with FS-LASIK and SMILE. However, there is more coma induced after FS-LASIK and in particular, left eyes treated with FS-LASIK.
