Abstract Details
Purpose:
To report the visual and refractive outcomes and complications of small incision lenticule extraction (ReLEx Smile) to correct myopia and myopic astigmatism using the Carl Zeiss 500kHz VisuMax Femtosecond laser.
Setting:
Nunemiso Eye Clinic, Seoul, Korea
Methods:
This study comprised 1121 eyes from 567 patients. The cap sidecut and lenticule were made using the Carl Zeiss 500kHz VisuMax Femtosecond laser. The lenticule was removed through the small incision 2.0 – 4.0 mm. Outcome measures were uncorrected distance visual acuity(UDVA), manifest refraction after 3 months postoperatively.
Results:
Mean age of the patient was 30.8 years. Preoperative spherical equivalent was -5.96±2.19D and preop. astigmatism was -1.06±0.80D. Postoperative UDVA was 1.12±0.24, postop. spherical equivalent was -0.58±0.64D, postop. astigmatism was -0.50±0.35D. 53% had a refractive outcome between ±0.5D of attempted refraction and 83% between ±1.0D of attempted refraction. Suction loss during the surgery occurred in 5 eyes. 10 eyes were retreated with surface ablation. Central toxic keratopathy was found in 1 eye.
Conclusions:
The results of ReLEx Smile for myopia and myopic astigmatism are predictable and safe, comparable to LASIK. Suction loss issue is a shortcoming.
