Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report a series of patients with endophthalmitis after uncomplicated phacoemulsification performed by multiple surgeon

Setting:

Bawri Nethralaya

Methods:

Clinical presentation and microbiology analysis of patients who presented with endophthalmitis between September 1st 2012 and March, 2013, were reviewed. Same preoperative and postoperative protocol was followed except preference of intracameral moxifloxacin, which was preferred by one surgeon. Clinical presentations and outcome were compared on the basis of causative organism.

Results:

Seventeen cases were identified with endophthalmitis, presenting 7 to 21 days after uneventful phacoemulsification. All cases were treated initially with a vitreous tap and injection; 9 patients subsequently undergone vitrectomy. Microbiology cultures for 2 patients were positive for staphylococcus epidermidis , 5 cases were positive for burkholderia cebacia, 2 were positive for aspergillus species, mixed infection in 2 cases and no growth/unknown 6 cases. 36% cases were resistance to moxifloxacin and 45% cases were resistance to cefuroxime. In 3 cases vision improved to 20/40 and 11cases achieved vision of 20/40-20/200 after certain intervention. However 3 cases progressed to phthysical.

Conclusions:

Endophthalmitis is rare but difficult to treat. Multiple drugs resistance is alarming. More researches are necessary to understand the course and outcome of the infection.
