Abstract Details
Purpose:
To study the antibiotic concentration in the aqueous humor to instillation of moxifloxacin (0,5%) ophthalmic solution and application of the ophthalmic medicinal films with moxifloxacin in the conjunctival cavity.
Setting:
Eye Diseases Department, the Bashkir State Medical University, Ufa, the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia.
Methods:
The trial was led on 12 eyes of 6 rabbits of breed 'Chinchilla'. The ophthalmic medicinal films with moxifloxacin were put to the conjunctival cavities of the first group of animals. The animals of the second group were instilled with 0,5% moxifloxacin solution 4 times a day. After 24 hours we spent collection of aqueous humor with a syringe. The antibiotic concentration in the liquid was measured by spectrophotometric method (Spectrophotometer “Specord M 40”).
Results:
Moxifloxacin concentration in the aqueos humor constituted 6,09±0,05 mkg/ml when applying ophthalmic medicated film, which is two times higher than the average therapeutic concentration. With instillations, the antibiotic concentration in the anterior chamber liquid was 1.10±0.01 mkg/ml, which only corresponds to the minimal suppressing concentration.
Conclusions:
With ophthalmic medicinal film placement, moxifloxacin concentration in the aqueous humor is 5,5 times greater than with the given antibiotic instillation. The use of moxifloxacin ophthalmic medicinal film is preferential to the instillation method and can be seen as the method of prophylaxis infectious postoperative inflammatory complications in ophthalmic surgery.
