Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess visual performance and subjective experience of patients implanted with a new bi-aspheric, segmented, multifocal intraocular lens (MIOL): the Mplus X

Setting:

Private ophthalmology clinic, Solihull, United Kingdom

Methods:

Seventeen patients (average age 64.00 ± 12.80 years) were binocularly implanted (34 eyes) with the Mplus X. Three months post-implantation, assessment was made of: manifest refraction; uncorrected (UCDVA) and best corrected (BCDVA) distance visual acuity; uncorrected (UCNVA) and best corrected (BCNVA) near visual acuity; defocus curves in photopic conditions over a range of +1.5 to -5.0 D in 0.5 Dioptres (D) in randomised increments with letters randomised between presentations; contrast sensitivity (CS) using the CSV-1000E; halometry, as an objective measure of glare, using randomised letters moving away from a glare source in randomised 45 degree meridian increments to quantify the obscuring effect of the halo; patient’s satisfaction with unaided near vision, using the Near Acuity Visual Questionnaire (NAVQ).

Results:

Mean residual manifest refraction was -0.13 ± 0.51D. Seventy four percent of eyes were within a MSE of ±0.50D. Mean monocular UCDVA was +0.10 ± 0.12 logMAR. Mean binocular UCDVA was 0.02 ±0.09 logMAR. Ninety four percent of eyes could read 0.3 or better without any reading correction. With reading correction, 100 percent of patients could read 0.3 or better. Mean monocular UCNVA was 0.18 ±0.16 logMAR, and BCNVA was 0.15 ±0.15 logMAR. Mean binocular UCNVA was 0.11 ±0.11 logMAR, and BCNVA was 0.09 ±0.12 logMAR. Mean monocular CS was 1.69 ±0.21 log units at 3 cycles per degree, 1.79 ±0.17 log units at 6 cycles per degree, 1.46 ±0.33 log units at 12 cycles per degree and 0.99 ±0.31 log units at 18 cycles per degree. Mean binocular CS was 1.75 ±0.14 log units at 3 cycles per degree, 1.88 ±0.20 log units at 6 cycles per degree, 1.66 ±0.19 log units at 12 cycles per degree and 1.11 ±0.20 log units at 18 cycles per degree. Mean binocular and monocular halometry showed a glare profile of less than 1 degree of debilitating light scatter. Mean NAVQ Rasch score for satisfaction for near vision was 20.43 ± 14.64 logits.

Conclusions:

The Mplus X provides a good visual outcome at distance and near with minimal dysphotopsia. Patients were very satisfied with their uncorrected near vision.
