Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the applicability of Keratograph Oculus corneal topographer for the diagnosis of dry eye with conventional methods.

Setting:

Oftalmosalud Instituto de ojos

Methods:

A prospective, comparative study included 30 patients who attended the clinic referring ocular surface symptoms of dry eye during a period from October to December 2013 were evaluated. The noninvasive break-up time of the tear film (NI-BUT) and the tear´s meniscus height using the Oculus Keratograph 5M Topographer were measured. NI-BUT was correlated with the traditional fluorescein break-up time of the tear film and tear´s meniscus height using test of Schirmer I, also an impression cytology of the ocular surface and OSDI (ocular surface disease index) were compared to the results obtained with the Keratographer.

Results:

BUT was 5.4 seg (SD = 3) and 8.7 seg ( SD= 4.9) using traditional method and topographer respectively. There was moderate correlation between traditional and topographer BUT values (CCI = 0.68, p value = 0.001). According to OSDI result, mean Schirmer test and tear meniscus height was 10.81 mm and 0.47 mm in the mild dry eye, 6.75 mm and 0.33 mm in moderate dry eye, and 5.5 mm and 0.27 mm in severe dry eye respectively.

Conclusions:

Measurements of the NI-BUT and tear´s meniscus height obtained with the Oculus Keratograph 5M corneal topographer can provide a simple, non-invasive screening test for dry eye with moderate comparability with the conventional diagnoses tests.
