Purpose:
To compare refractive outcomes after femtosecond LASIK with MEL 80 (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Germany) in combination with CRS-Master (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Germany), VISX S4 IR (Abbott Medical Optics, Santa Ana, CA) in combination with WaveScan (Abbott Medical Optics, Santa Ana, California) and VISX S4 IR in combination with iDesign (Abbott Medical Optics, Santa Ana, California)

Methods:
This comparative, retrospective study included three groups each 200 myopic eyes undergoing femtosecond LASIK. Group 1. MEL80/ CRS-Master, group 2. VISX S4 IR/ WaveScan and group 3. VISX S4 IR/ iDesign. Corneal flaps were created using the iFS femtosecond laser (Abbott Medical Optics, Santa Ana, CA). Mean patient age of the analyzed sample was 34 years (standard deviation, SD: 4.8; range 17 to 69 years). A comprehensive visual and ocular examination was performed preoperatively in all cases that included manifest and cycloplegic refraction, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA). Postoperatively, patients were examined the day after surgery and then during follow-up visits at 1 week and 2 months after surgery.
Results:
At 2 months postoperatively, UDVA was 1.0 or better in group 1./ 2./ 3 in 92%/ 96%/ 99%. In group 1. / 2. /3. 74%/ 71%/ 78% achieved an UDVA of 1.2 or better. Regarding predictability, at 2 months, 95 %/ 98%/ 100% had a postoperative SE within ± 0,5D and 90 %/ 92%/ 96% within ± 0,25D emmetropia in group1./ 2./ 3., respectively. In group 3. there was no significant increase wavefront RMS and primary spherical aberration postoperatively. A significant decrease of total RMS values was found.
Conclusions:
Wavefront-guided LASIK using the new aberrometer in this retrospective comparative evaluation was slightly more effective, safe and predictable for the correction of myopia than femtosecond LASIK with MEL 80 in combination with CRS or VISX S4 IR in combination with WaveScan.
