Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the clinical outcomes after bilateral implantation of an aspheric apodized diffractive +2.5 diopter (D) multifocal toric intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting:

Bayindir Hospital-Maya Eye Hospital

Methods:

Twelwe patients had bilateral implantation of the AcrySof(®) IQ ReSTOR(®)+2.5 D toric multifocal IOLs (Models SND1T2 (4 eyes), SND1T3 (8 eyes) , SND1T4 (6 eyes) , or SND1T5 (6 eyes); Alcon Laboratories, Inc., Fort Worth, TX) at the Department of Ophthalmology of Bayındır Hospital and Maya Hospital in Ankara, Turkey. Inclusion criteria were age ranging from 20 to 75 years, need for bilateral cataract extraction and regular corneal astigmatism from 0.75 to 2.5 D. Six-month evaluations included spherical equivalent (SE), refractive and corneal cylinder, visual acuity at various distances and IOL rotation. Subjective questionnaires were administered preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively.

Results:

All patients completed the 6-month visit. The mean SE (24 eyes) was 0.12 D ± 0.23 (SD) at 6 months (± 1.00 D in all patients). The mean refractive cylinder decreased from 1.55 ± 0.8 D to 0.42 ± 0.43 D (≤ 0.50 D in 86%). The mean binocular uncorrected Snellen visual acuity was 0.94 ± 0.08 at 4 mt, J4 at 40 cm, J2 at 60 cm. The mean IOL rotation was 0.83 ± 1.7 degrees. Patient subjective experience with visual tasks at all distances improved from the preoperative visit to the 6-month visit.

Conclusions:

Six months after implantation of the toric multifocal IOL, patients had significantly reduced SE and refractive cylinder, excellent visual acuity at far and intermediate distances and acceptable near visual acuity, and minimal IOL rotation.
