Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate visual outcomes after bilateral implantation of an apodized +3.0 diopter (D) addition power toric diffractive multifocal intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, Tokyo Dental College Suidobashi Hospital and Hayashi Eye Hospital

Methods:

This prospective clinical trial comprised 130 eyes of 65 patients who had preoperative regular corneal astigmatism of 0.75 D or greater and 2.82 D or less, and were implanted with the AcrySof ReSTOR (SND1T3: 65 eyes, SND1T4: 37 eyes, SND1T5: 20 eyes, SND1T6: 8 eyes, Alcon) following cataract removal. Spherical equivalent (SE), refractive cylinder, IOL rotation, visual acuities (VAs) at distance, near (40 cm), intermediate (50 cm, 1 m), contrast sensitivity, spectacle usage, and glare/halo were examined until 1 year postoperatively.

Results:

At the 1-year postoperative visit, the mean SE was 0.08 ± 0.30 D, refractive cylinder was 0.43 ± 0.38 D, IOL rotation was 5.73 ± 4.37 degrees. The mean bilateral uncorrected distance VA was -0.04 ± 0.10 logMAR, corrected distance VA was -0.11 ± 0.09 logMAR, uncorrected near VA was 0.00 ± 0.11 logMAR, distance corrected near VA was -0.01 ± 0.09 logMAR, corrected near VA was -0.06 ± 0.09 logMAR, intermediate uncorrected VA at 50 cm was 0.00 ± 0.11 logMAR, intermediate distance corrected VA at 50 cm was -0.03 ± 0.11 logMAR, intermediate uncorrected VA at 1 m was 0.11 ± 0.15 logMAR, intermediate distance corrected VA at 1 m was 0.11 ± 0.16 logMAR. Contrast sensitivities were within normal range, and 75.4% of the patients did not require any spectacles. None of the patients complained of serious glare and halo.

Conclusions:

The multifocal toric IOL provides good and safe astigmatism correction and range of vision from distance to near at 40 cm.
