Abstract Details
Purpose:
The aim of the study was to compare the uncorrected bilateral reading ability after bilateral implantation of the multifocal lenses IQ ReSTOR SN6AD1 +3.0D (Alcon Laboratories, Inc., Fort Worth, TX, USA) or Diffractiva-aA +3.5D (Human Optics, Erlangen, Germany) under different lighting and contrast conditions.

Methods:
40 patients were assigned to two randomized groups of 20 patients each, which received either the ReSTOR or Diffractiva aA lens. After simultaneous bilateral cataract surgery, patients were examined at 1 day and 1 and 3 months postoperatively. Examinations included a standardized assessment of the reading ability with the Salzburg Reading Desk (SRDVision LLC, NY, USA) under different lighting and contrast conditions (95% contrast/100cd•mˉ² luminance and 30% contrast/20 cd•mˉ² luminance)
Results:
The uncorrected reading ability [logMAR] showed no statistically significant differences neither under optimal (1 month: 0.14±0.12 vs. 0.15±0.12; 3 months: 0.18±0.13 vs. 0.20±0.14, p= 0.78) nor under reduced lighting and contrast conditions (1 month: 0.32±0.14 vs. 0.32±0.12; 3 months: 0.37±0.15 vs. 0.37±0.15, p= 0.85). The well known influence of lighting and contrast on the performance of multifocal lenses in general was observed in the data set.
Conclusions:
The Diffractiva aA multifocal lens yields an equal postoperative performance to the widely used ReSTOR concerning the uncorrected reading ability of patients under different lighting and contrast conditions.
