Session Title: Multifocal Toric IOLs
Session Date/Time: Tuesday 16/09/2014 | 14:00-16:00
Paper Time: 14:36
Venue: Boulevard A

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the predictability, safety and efficacy of the intraocular (IOL) bifocal lense TECNIS Multifocal +3.25 (Abbott Medical Optics, Inc., Santa Ana, CA, USA) for far and near visión with a 3 months follow-up.
Setting:
Instituto Oftalmológico Fernández-Vega. Oviedo. Spain.
Methods:
Non randomized, prospective, clinical trial which included 58 eyes from 29 patients bilaterally implanted with a TECNIS +3.25 IOL. 76% of the sample were females and 24% males. Mean age at the time of surgery was 62.4 ± 10.8 years (range from 43 to 82) and the mean refractive error +1.57 ± 3.28 diopters (D) (range from -12.00 to +7.75 D). Mean refractive cylinder was -0.75 ± 1.09 (range from -5.75 a 0.00). Distance corrected visual acuity and other refractive parameters were recorded preoperatively and three months after surgery.
Results:
At three months of surgery the spherical equivalent had diminished from 1.20 ± 3.39 D (range from -12.25 to +7.50) to 0.00 ± 0.38 (range from -1.00 to +1.00), where more than 70% of the eyes were in the interval of ± 0.25 D and 88% of the eyes in the ±0.50 D interval. The distance corrected visual acuity (DCVA) was 0.96 ± 0.10. 72% of the eyes reached a DCVA ≥ 1.0 and 100% reached a DCVA ≥ 0.7. The safety index calculated at three months was 1.18 ± 0.63. Regarding near vision, at 40 cm., the results were satisfactory obtaining a mean score of 0.80 ± 0.16. None of the eyes lost more than one line of DCVA; 1 eye lost 1 line and 12 eyes (21%) gained 1 or more lines of DCVA. No intraoperative or postoperative complications were reported.
Conclusions:
The predictability, safety and efficacy results of the TECNIS Multifocal +3.25 lens were good in far and near vision during the follow-up period. These results suggest that this lens is a good choice for a lensectomy programmed with refractive purpose.
