Abstract Details
Purpose:
To describe a new innovative intraocular lens design that is designed to provide a
continuous range of high-quality vision.
Setting:
AMO Groningen, Netherlands
Methods:
A variety of existing and new intraocular lens (IOL) technologies were assessed
using computer simulations and lab measurements. Combinations of refractive and diffractive
technologies were included. The resulting technology is described. IOLs were produced and
tested in physical model eyes and computer ray tracing.
Results:
The new IOL design merges three optical technologies: (1) correction of spherical
aberration (2) correction of chromatic aberration using a monofocal diffractive technology for
enhancing the contrast in the far focus, and (3) distribution of light over a range of distances
using optimized diffractive echelette technology. IOL measurements show high quality images
over a range of distances. Imaging quality at intermediate distances was better than that of
reference monofocal and multifocal designs. The modulation transfer function (MTF) at far
focus was maintained at the level of that of monofocal spherical and aspheric IOLs. Computer
simulations confirmed a visual acuity equal or better than 0.0 logMAR over a range of 1.75
diopters. Contrast vision was constant (<1% change) over a range of 1.5 diopters.
Conclusions:
The combination of new and existing diffractive and refractive technologies
result in an IOL design with unique optical properties, suggesting that the optical design may
provide an extended range of vision, without sacrificing visual quality at distance. Simulated
visual acuity stays within one line (0.1 logMAR) from its peak over a range of 2 diopters.
