Abstract Details
Purpose:
The aim of the retrospective study was to compare the results of the intermediate-near- and distance visual acuity and the resulting target refraction after bilateral cataract surgery for both IOLs.
Setting:
Eye Hospital Bellevue, Kiel, Germany
Methods:
We analyzed a group of thirty-nine patients/78 eyes (Range 65 to 79 years) after bilateral cataract surgery. Thirty-six eyes of eighteen patients were implanted with the B1EWYN Progressive IOL and forty-two eyes of twenty-one patients were implanted with the FineVision trifocal IOL. The mean preoperative monocular CDVA was 0.23/0.26 logMAR (Progressive/Fine Vision IOL). We measured the following parameters postoperatively: corrected and uncorrected, monocular and binocular distance visual acuity (UDVA and CDVA), the uncorrected and distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA and DCIVA) at a 60 and 80 cm distance, the uncorrected and distance-corrected near visual acuity (UNVA and DCNVA) at a 40 cm distance and the achieved target refraction.
Results:
The mean UDVA was monocular 0.09/0.11 logMAR (Progressive /Fine Vision IOL) and binocular -0.01/0.02 logMAR; the mean CDVA monocular was -0.03/0.02 logMAR. The mean UIVA was monocular at 60 cm 0.33/0.39 logMAR, binocular 0.23/0.30 logMAR ; the mean DCIVA monocular was 0.37/0.38 logMAR. The mean UIVA was monocular at 80 cm 0.29/0.36 logMAR and binocular 0.21/0.25 logMAR; the mean DCIVA monocular was 0.31/0.34 logMAR. The mean UNVA was monocular 0.18/0.27 logMAR , binocular 0.09/0.14 logMAR; the mean DCNVA monocular was 0.13/0.24 logMAR.The averege residual spherical equivalent was 0.22 ± 0.54 Dpt/0.07 ± 0.36 Dpt and the Δ (achieved/attempted) residual spherical equivalent was 0.11/0.08 Dpt (Progressive /Fine Vision IOL)
Conclusions:
The mean results demonstrate a satisfactory postoperative visual quality and acuity in all distances (near, intermediate, distance). The postoperative average residual spherical equivalent of the Progressive lens shows a wider deviation from the target of emmetropia, in comparison to the Fine vision lens. Taking this difference into consideration, the biometrical settings were optimized.
