Abstract Details
Purpose:
Trifocal intraocular lenses (IOL) promise good distance, intermediate and near visual acuity (VA). The purpose of the study was to evaluate visual outcomes after cataract surgery and implantation of a trifocal intraocular lens (AT LISA tri 839MP).
Setting:
European multicentric study. 12 study centers in Germany, France, Spain and the UK.
Methods:
This multicentric study comprised a prospective series of 106 patients who underwent bilateral cataract surgery and trifocal intraocular lens implantation. Cataract patients older than 50 years old, with a corneal astigmatism lower than 1.0 D and no other ocular pathology were included. Biometry measurements and IOL power calculations were performed with IOLMaster. Monocular and binocular, corrected and uncorrected far, intermediate and near visual acuities (logMAR) were measured preoperatively, 1 and 3 months after surgery at 6 m, 80 cm and 40 cm respectively.
Results:
Mean monocular uncorrected VA was 0.08 ± 0.12, 0.16 ± 0.16, or 0.20 ± 0.16 at respectively 6 m, 80 cm, or 40 cm. Mean monocular distance corrected VA was 0.02 ± 0.09, 0.14 ± 0.15, or 0.13 ± 0.14 at respectively 6 m, 80 cm, or 40 cm.
Mean binocular uncorrected VAs was 0.02 ± 0.09, 0.09 ± 0.15 or 0.14 ± 0.15 at respectively 6 m, 80 cm and 40 cm. Binocular distance corrected VAs were -0.01 ± 0.07, 0.08 ± 0.15 or 0.08 ± 0.12 at respectively 6 m, 80 cm and 40 cm. The visual acuities were stable during the follow-up duration of 3 months. 98% of the patients reached uncorrected binocular intermediate and distance visual acuities equal to or better than 0.30 logMAR and 94% of the patients had binocular uncorrected near visual acuity equal to or better than 0.3 logMAR.
Statistically significant improvement in uncorrected and corrected distance, intermediate and near visual acuity was achieved compared with preoperative values.
Conclusions:
The AT LISA tri 839MP was effective for the improvement of distance, intermediate and near vision and provided the patients with an excellent visual acuity level for all three distances.
