Abstract Details

Purpose:

Trifocal intraocular lenses (IOL) aim to provide spectacle independence for far, intermediate and near vision. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the refractive outcomes, spectacle independence and patient satisfaction after cataract surgery and implantation of a trifocal IOL (AT LISA tri 839MP).

Setting:

European multicentric study. 12 study centers in Germany, France, Spain and the UK.

Methods:

This multicentric study comprised a prospective series of 106 patients who underwent bilateral cataract surgery and implantation of the AT LISA tri 839MP. Cataract patients older than 50 years old, with a corneal astigmatism lower than 1.0 D and no other ocular pathology were included. Biometry measurements and IOL power calculations were performed with IOLMaster. Subjective refraction was measured preoperatively, 1 and 3 months after surgery. Additionally a questionnaire was used to subjectively evaluate the patients satisfaction and the level of spectacle independence for far, intermediate and near vision.

Results:

Mean preoperative spherical equivalent (SE) refraction was 0.81 ± 1.91 D (range from -7.5 D to +4.5 D). Postoperatively, there was a statistically significant decrease in the SE value, reaching respectively 0.02 ± 0.39 D (range: -1.125 to +1.25 D) and 0.14 ± 0.41 D (range: -0.875 to 1.625 D) after 1 month and 3 months. The spherical refraction decreased from a preoperative value of 1.02 ± 1.91 D to 0.19 ± 0.39 D and 0.31 ± 0.41 D after 1 month and 3 months. The cylinder refraction was measured preoperatively with -0.42 ± 0.52 D and -0.36 ± 0.44 D after 1 month and -0.35 ± 0.44 D after 3 months. Spectacle freedom at 3 months was achieved for 95%, 91% and 85% of the patients for far, intermediate and near vision. Three months postoperatively, the satisfaction was rated very good or good by 94%, 93% and 84% of the patients for far, intermediate and near vision.

Conclusions:

Bilateral implantation of the AT LISA tri 839MP resulted in excellent and stable refractive outcomes. Patients were highly satisfied with their uncorrected vision and the lens provided high rate of spectacle independence.
