Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the rotational stability of an acrylic angle-supported phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) and postoperative changes in corneal endothelial cell density 12 months after lens implantation for correction of moderate to high myopia.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Centro Hospitalar do Baixo Vouga, Aveiro, Portugal.
Methods:
Patients with a history of moderate to high myopia underwent unilateral or bilateral implantation of an acrylic angle-supported PIOL (AcrySof Cachet; Alcon Laboratories, Inc., Fort Worth, TX). All were followed up for 12 months. IOL rotation was assessed using the slit lamp at first week after implantation, 6 and 12 months postoperatively. Noncontact specular microscopy was used to evaluate corneal endothelial cell density at 1, 6 and 12 months postoperatively.
Results:
78 eyes of 43 patients with a mean age of 33 years old (ranging from 21 to 51 years) with moderate to high myopia were included in the statistical analysis. All underwent successful IOL implantation and follow-up. A 95% confidence interval was used for the statistical analysis.A mean 12-month rotation of 12,73 ± 14,45 was observed. The overall overall mean percentage change in endothelial cell density 1 year after surgery (0,44% ± 1,16).
The Student’s t-test for paired data showed no statistically significant difference between preoperative data and postoperative data for the mean 12-month endothelial cell density (p=0,697) and showed statistically significant difference for the mean 12-month pIOL rotation (p<0,01).
Conclusions:
One-year findings showed that the angle-supported pIOL provided moderate rotation stability and safety corneal endothelial cell density in patients with moderate to high myopia.
