Abstract Details

Purpose:

Examine the state of the cytokine profile of tears (TNFα, IL-1β and IL-4) in patients after surface ablation.

Setting:

Ukraine, in Lugansk Regional Center of Eye Diseases.

Methods:

We observed 57 patients with varying degrees of myopia, who was done transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy on both eyes. Patients were divided into three groups according to the degree of myopia. First group were 18 patients (36 eyes) with weak degree of myopia. Second group comprised 23 patients (46 eyes) with average degree of myopia. The third group – 16 patients (32 eyes) with high degree of myopia. The patients underwent: visometry, refractometry, biomicroscopy, fluorescein test. Laboratory methods included in the determination of tear cytokines (TNFα, IL-1β, IL-4), which was carried out on laboratory equipment Sanofi Diagnostic Pasteur (France). The study was conducted using certified in Ukraine test production systems «ProCon» (Protein contour, Russia) by enzyme immunoassay (EIA).

Results:

Before surgery concentration of tear cytokines was in limits of norm and made: TNFα - 110,37,2 pg/ml (P<0,05), IL-1β - 100,02,8 pg/ml (P<0,05), IL-4 - 34,8+2,3 pg/ml (P<0,05). After the operation, the content of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNFα and IL-1β in patients of the first group with weak degree of myopia was 139,6±2,8 pg/ml (P<0,05), and 131,2±1,4 pg/ml (P<0,05) respectively. In patients of the second group with average degree - the concentration of TNFα was 168,1±1,8 pg/ml (P <0,05), and IL-1β - 152,3±2,2 pg/ml (P<0,01). In the third group of patients with high degree of myopia studied cytokine content was 188,2±2,4 pg/ml (P<0,05), and 175,6±2,4 pg/ml (P<0,05), respectively. On this background the dynamics in the content of the IL-4 was not detected in the patients studied groups.

Conclusions:

In patients after transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy observed increase in the concentration of proinflammatory cytokines in the tear. The degree of increase corresponds to the depth of laser ablation.
