Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate long-term results of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in keratoconus suspect (KCS) and mild keratoconus (KCN)

Setting:

Navid didegan Eye Clinic, Eye Research Center, Mashhad, Iran

Methods:

This is a cohort study comprising 172 eyes from 91 patients (141 KCS and 31 mild KCN by Rabinowitz and Amsler-Krumeich criteria, respectively) that underwent PRK using Technolas 217z100 excimer laser between January 2005 and June 2006 at Navid didegan Eye Clinic, Mashhad, Iran. Uncorrected and best-corrected visual acuity, corneal topography were assessed before the procedure and 3, 6, 12, 24, 60 and 96 months after the procedure.

Results:

Mean uncorrected visual acuity showed a statistically significant improvement (P < 0.05) at 1, 2, 5 and 8 years follow-up. One hundred and seventy eyes (97.6%) from 90 patients showed no progression to keratectasia during follow-up whereas two eyes of mild KCN displayed corneal ectasia in this period.

Conclusions:

PRK in KCS and mild KCN is a safe and effective procedure for improving uncorrected vision by observing some conditions. However, close follow-up of such patients is crucial to detect any progression to keratetasia and as soon as possible to perform preventive procedures like corneal collagen crosslinking .
